On the way to the taco truck...

Today is the "Don't Take an Immigrant to Work Day" or school, or shopping, or much of anywhere they'll have a positive economic impact. This morning my classroom was empty, and during my prep period I decided to walk over to the taco truck that parks over on High Street near Foothill Boulevard. It wasn't there.

I'd forgotten that, of course, it wouldn't be there because of the protests. The truck is operated, patronized largely by, and probably owned by immigrants. Meanwhile, I saw a sea of people in the distance flowing down International Boulevard towards the downtown area.

Some were carrying Mexican flags, but most of them were waving the stars & stripes. And all of them were shouting "Si, se puedes!" Thousands of immigrants, mostly Latino, were pouring down the street. How many of them were there nation wide?

According to this San Francisco Chronicle editorial, 35 million people in this country were born somewhere else. At least a third of them are undocumented immigrants. California is home for more of these people than any other state. The California Senate recognized this when it endorsed the work boycott.

Was everyone happy about this? House Majority Leader John Boehner said "The brazen support of California Democrats for this walkout amounts to a reckless endorsement of policies that make our nation and our borders less secure." Apparently, Congressman Boehner wants to lay some of the blame for the U.S. national security problems on illegal immigration instead of U.S. foreign policy. Some are pointing to "white" guys like Boehner and saying immigration is a race issue.

Al Rodriguez, leader of the new group "You Don't Speak for Me" sides with Boehner against undocumented immigrants. His organization consists of Latinos against illegal immigration. One of their chief arguments is that America is subsidizing undocumented immigrants.

What is your opinion about this issue? Write a blog entry that covers:
  • What the protests have achieved.
  • The pro's and con's of the protests.
  • Your experience and/or your opinion about the protests.
  • Link to at least three news stories and refer to them in your post.

  • Use my post above as an example.
